All Comic Cons are Not Created Equal: How Denver Pop Culture Con is Different
This topic comes up often enough that it seems like a good time to talk about it.
Whether we call it “comic con” or some other name, it’s important to note that comic cons are typically not traveling shows. That is, there isn’t one comic con out there that moves from city to city all year.
It is true that there are some groups who own and operate multiple comic cons and relatedly-titled pop culture events, and many of them are 100% independent.
Denver Pop Culture Con is one of those independent events. Here’s what you should know about us, too.
We are a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization Dedicated to Literacy and Education
While most of the other comic cons and like events across the country, and even the world, are for-profit ventures, ours is not.
This means that we don’t have shareholders to please, and no one is making an outrageous salary. In fact, 95% of our business is conducted by dedicated volunteers and many of the employees still donate hours to the organization.
Our organization exists primarily to educate, and we do this year-round through after-school programs, workshops, teacher training, and summer camps, to name just a few.
This year, we are launching our very own classroom at our office where local school kids can drop in or sign up for fun and engaging activities. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what we do the other 362 days a year at Pop Culture Classroom.
At Denver Pop Culture Con, we have full tracks of educational programming, our own literary conference called Page 23, and an almost 10,000 square-foot Kids’ Lab dedicated to providing kids both an educational and fun experience, with some surprise guests.
We also have a continuing education credit program for K-12 teachers offered through Adams State University and a program we are super proud of called Experience the CoMix, which brings in kids from all over the Denver Metro area to the con and provides programming all day just for them. At the 2018 show, we will proudly announce the winners for our new event called the Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards.
The submissions have come from all across the spectrum from a host of major and minor publishers and the judging is done externally and by a diverse cross section of professionals. You can learn more about this here: http://popcultureclassroom.org/excellence-in-graphic-literature-awards/
What is True for Other Comic Cons Isn’t Always True for Us
Because our priorities are a bit different, Denver Pop Culture Con becomes something a little different too.
It means that while for-profit ventures can cycle their money back into each show they produce, our event supports a year-round mission and the entirety of Pop Culture Classroom.
This fact, coupled with the enormous cost to produce such an event in Denver, means that we don’t have the same budget as other shows in our attendance and size category.
It sometimes means we can’t book, say, the entire cast of the latest Marvel movie, but don’t let that stop you.
Comic Con isn’t just about the stars! We have over 600 hours of programming and activities, plus a million square-feet of comic con goodness filled with artists, creators, authors, publishers, vendors, and a few dozen surprises around every corner.
You should be there to see it.
Con4aCause is Not Just a Hashtag
You may not have heard of #Con4aCause yet, but you will!
We want attendees to know that when they visit Denver Pop Culture Con, they are actively supporting the mission of Pop Culture Classroom, and it’s a cause you can feel good about.
It is truly the Con with a Cause, and that cause is literacy.
