Denver, CO (June 1, 2020) — Following the issuance of the State of Colorado’s intent to extend its use of the Colorado Convention Center through the end of the year, Pop Culture Classroom today announced it must cancel Denver Pop Culture Con 2020.
“Due to Colorado’s Public Health Order preventing events at the convention center through December, Denver Pop Culture Con 2020 is, unfortunately, cancelled,” said Denver Pop Culture Con Director Christina Angel in prepared remarks.
“We’re profoundly disappointed that we won’t be able to hold Denver Pop Culture Con this year, but the health and safety of our community is our highest priority. We are committed to doing as much as we can to reduce frustration and inconvenience as everyone deals with this unprecedented situation. And in the meantime, we’ll get to work on creating a fantastic event for 2021.”
All 2020 Denver Pop Culture Con tickets will be refunded, and 2020 DPCC exhibitors will have the option of full refund or credit for the next event. New ticket on-sale and guest announcements for next year’s show will begin later this year.
Each year, Denver Pop Culture Con brings together tens of thousands of artists, creators, students, entertainment industry workers, educators, volunteers, families, and pop culture fans together.
“Denver Pop Culture Con isn’t just about fandom. It’s a place where we come together and celebrate that which we love,” said Angel. “It’s like a family reunion.”
The event is Colorado’s largest three-day celebration of comics, books, movies, TV, gaming and other pop culture. And it is among the largest pop-culture-oriented events in the country.
Denver Pop Culture Con contributes $10 million – $40 million in economic benefit to downtown Denver annually. It also offers a major market for creators and a variety of opportunities for on-site education and entertainment.
Hundreds of students and educators who might otherwise be unable to attend are able to enjoy Denver Pop Culture Con through our scholarship programs. Proceeds from Denver Pop Culture Con support year-round efforts by Pop Culture Classroom to educate and connect people through the pop culture they love, including free comics, video classes, workshops, and more.
“We’re committed to this community and are planning for Denver Pop Culture Con in May 2021,” Angel said. “We will continue to focus on our dedication to education and community-building, and we’ll be providing more online experiences and content to help keep our community engaged as we get through this difficult period.”
Denver Pop Culture Con 2021’s May dates will be the first in a couple of years not to fall on a holiday weekend. This year’s Denver Pop Culture Con was originally scheduled for July 4 weekend, and then postponed to Thanksgiving weekend before the Public Health Order ultimately led to today’s cancellation.
