How Do We Book the Convention Center?
This may not yet be a pressing question for you this far before the con, but a lot of questions on this topic have come up frequently in previous years—so I thought it best to get this topic addressed early. If you have ever asked the question, “Why does the date for Denver Pop Culture Con keep changing?”, or “Why is there only one or two entrances when there are dozens of doors?”, then this post is for you.
Let’s begin with just a little background on the Convention Center and how we book it, because this is where the answers stem from for the rest of the questions.
The Colorado Convention Center is owned by the City of Denver and managed by the Denver Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, known as Visit Denver.
Visit Denver manages the booking of the center, and based on their open dates and times, offers us options for holding Denver Pop Culture Con for any given year.
Because Denver Pop Culture Con is so large, and the Convention Center is often booked out in pieces (some ballrooms, some floor space, etc.), it can be challenging for us to find a weekend when there is enough space available to accommodate the entire requirements of the con.
Why Do the Con Dates Change Each Year?
Because we are limited to what’s available and offered to us by Visit Denver, we are unable to secure the same weekend each year, and our dates can shift as much as six weeks from one year to the next.
It doesn’t help that June is one of the most in-demand months of the year for Denver convention space, and so it seems we will never be sure of our dates for any given con until they are secured.
Because of this, you can expect the dates will be changing quite a bit in the next couple of years. None of this, unfortunately, is in our control.
Why Don’t You Book the Entire Convention Center?
As you may know if you attended in 2017, we must share the Convention Center with other groups, some of which are larger than others, and we do not control this either.
While we have succeeded in making it feel like we had the entire center at our disposal for the past several years, 2017 made it obvious that we do not, because we did not have access to the same space we had enjoyed before. This is also something we cannot control.
For example, in 2017, if had we not taken the space for the dates that we did, there would not have been Denver Pop Culture Con in 2017 at all.
Again, we don’t govern this or have any say whatsoever about it. Furthermore, we have never been granted permission to rent the entire Convention Center, and it does not look like we will ever be granted that permission.
Why Are Entrances and Exits Limited?
We are not permitted to utilize another group’s space, nor are we permitted to use space we haven’t rented. So, in 2017, we could not use the front of the building near the Blue Bear because we had not (and could not) rent that space.
This was not designed or enforced by us, but rather a simple fact of scheduling and availability. By the same token, we must limit the doors we use to the spaces we rent, and we need to secure those entrances and exits, which is why they are limited in number.
Why Don’t You Move Denver Pop Culture Con to Another Venue?
People ask this question all the time and the simple answer is that the Colorado Convention Center is the only venue in the state that can hold an event as large as Denver Pop Culture Con. We could break the show up into smaller shows and look at other venues, but we are fans of The Big Show.
