What is Educator’s Day?

Educator’s Day is a chance for education professionals to attend Denver Pop Culture Con for free! Our goal for Educator’s Day is to provide teachers, librarians, administrators, and other educators the chance to learn about how they can improve their craft using the tools of pop culture. Activities will take place on Friday, May 31st, during Denver Pop Culture Con 2019 (DPCC’19).

What Are the Specific Conditions?

  1. Educator’s Day will ONLY occur on Friday, May 31st, 2019.

  3. The application will be available until Friday, May 15th, or until all the tickets are spoken for, whichever happens first.
  4. Just because you apply doesn’t mean you will get a pass.
  5. The first round of recipients will be notified by e-mail in March of 2019 . The final round will be notified by May 16th.
  6. Those chosen to participate will be given instructions on how to access their passes in late April.

  8. If desired, tickets for Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd, can be purchased here.

Experience the CoMix Application

Applications for Experience the CoMix at DPCC 2019 Are Now Closed

Please email education@popcultureclassroom.org

What is Experience the CoMix?

Experience the CoMix (EtC), offered in partnership with Illegal Pete’s restaurants, provides qualifying middle and high school students with complimentary badges to Denver Pop Culture Con with the goal of helping them experience pop culture as a fun, engaging educational tool. This year’s EtC session will take place on Friday, May 31st, 2019 from roughly 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT.

Who Can Come?

Middle and high school students who are unable to afford a day at Denver Pop Culture Con are welcome to attend. Our goal is to provide an inspiring cultural and educational opportunity that will open minds to new, potential career opportunities. We ask that students who have already come to Experience the CoMix in previous years please refrain from returning to allow others to enjoy this unique experience. In addition, adequate numbers of chaperones are expected to attend with the students and will be given complimentary badges for Friday, May 31st, 2019.

How Can I or My Students Attend?

Educators and administrators teaching and serving at Colorado middle schools and high schools are encouraged to apply to have their students participate by clicking on the Apply Now! button below, then filling out and submitting the application form. This form-page can also be accessed directly at HERE.

Please note that each year the Experience the CoMix session fills to capacity quickly, on a first come, first served basis. We therefore strongly recommend you submit your application as soon as possible.

For any other questions or concerns, please email us at education@popcultureclassroom.org. We look forward to reading and enjoying your submissions!

ED589: Enhancing Education Through Pop Culture

Registration for ED589 at DPCC 2019 is Open

Please Note: You Must Register with Adams State by Friday, May 15th, 2019 in order to Take Part in the Course at Denver Pop Culture Con 2019.

Offered through Adams State University as a 0.5 graduate credit, ED 589: Enhancing Education Through Pop Culture is a 3-day professional development course offered exclusively at Denver Pop Culture Con.

Please email education@popcultureclassroom.org

What is ED 589?

Designed and administered by educators at Pop Culture Classroom, this course will provide participants the opportunity to share ideas, build critical partnerships, and learn from leaders in the field of pop culture education. Throughout the convention weekend, participants will:

  • Participate in both theoretical and/or methods-based workshops and panels.
  • Access resources ready to be utilized in the classroom immediately.
  • Learn how to leverage this ubiquitous form of cultural expression to further their craft as educators.
  • Discuss how popular culture resources, events, and expressions can be successfully integrated into lesson plans for a range of classrooms and educational settings.
  • Develop the ability to integrate pop culture into regular education and combine relationship development with content education.
When is the Course Offered?

The course will take place exclusively at Denver Pop Culture Con 2019 (May 31st- June 2nd, 2019).

How Much Does the Course Cost?

A normal 3-Day Adult badge costs about $95 including taxes and fees added by AXS (the 3rd party ticket sales processing company we are mandated to use by the City of Denver). The .5 Graduate Credit costs $28 through Adams State. In total, that’s about $113.

But wait! That’s too much, you say! Well, good news. We love teachers, so we are discounting this class for you all!
In that vein, ED 589 participants will be eligible to receive a discounted 3-day badge so that the entire class will only cost $95, the same as a normal 3-Day Adult badge. We are not adding any additional fees because we know your budgets are tight.

Afterward, you will be asked to register for the class with Adams State. Remember that only those who sign up for the Adams State course by May 15, 2019 will be eligible to take part in the ED 589 course at Denver Pop Culture Con 2019.

And don’t forget, you will get to do a heck of a lot more at Denver Pop Culture Con than attend ED 589!

What Are the Course Requirements?

The course will be offered Pass/Fail. In order to receive a passing grade, participants must:

  • Attend at least 7.5 hours of qualifying conference content at Denver Pop Culture Con. A list of qualifying content will be sent to participants by May 27, 2019 at the latest.
  • Be sure to record the names of each panel/workshop, as you’ll need to enter these on the Conference Feedback Form.
  • Actively engage in discussions and activities during these sessions.
  • Complete and turn in the Conference Feedback Form by the published deadline.
How Will I Get My Badge for Denver Pop Culture Con?

Once your registration with both Denver Pop Culture Con and Adams State have been confirmed you will be notified about the badge retrieval process.

Important Note: Anyone who purchases the 3-day badge and does NOT sign up for the Adams State course by May 15th, 2019 will be promptly refunded their money, and must then purchase a regular 3-Day Adult badge in order to attend the con.

What is “Qualifying Conference Content”?

Denver Pop Culture Con hosts several hundred hours of amazing programming over the three-day event. While being inspiring and just plain awesome, sitting through an hour of questions with Millie Bobby Brown won’t really support your craft as an educator. To that end, Pop Culture Classroom has worked hard to curate a list of education-centric panels that will specifically support you as a teacher. A list of approved content will be available closer to the convention.

Am I Eligible to Take This Course and Receive Credit Even If I Took and Passed ED 589 at Last Year’s Denver Pop Culture Con?

Yes! Adams State understands that the content is different and the course will be dated on your transcript, demonstrating that it was a different experience.

Who Can I Contact with Questions Before Denver Pop Culture Con?

For additional information about the course, please email the education team here: education@popcultureclassrooom.org.

What Happens If I Need Help at Denver Pop Culture Con?

Volunteers and staff will be on hand to assist you in case you have any questions during the convention. Detailed on-site instructions and logistics for ED589 participants will be provided in advance of the convention.

What is the Conference Feedback Form?

The Conference Feedback Form is a web form that will ask you to list all the panels you attended and provide feedback on your experience. In addition, you will be asked to describe how you will implement your learning into your classroom. Finally, you will have the opportunity to tell what went well and what areas for growth you saw in this class. In all, we expect you to take 2-3 hours on this summative assessment. Not bad for .5 credits.

Where is the Conference Feedback Form?

We will email you a link to the Conference Feedback Form once the convention has ended. That way, you can enter the panels you attended and answer the reflection questions once you’ve had time to digest all the amazing panels you’ve experienced.

How Will I Get Evidence of My Credit?

If you complete all the requirements by the July 17th, 2019 deadline, we will let Adams State know. Shortly after that, you will receive evidence of credit from Adams State. You can share this with your HR department for salary/re-certification credit.

For any other questions and concerns regarding the course, please email us at education@popcultureclassroom.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
